Preparing for pregnancy and the early stage

  • Taking folic acid (at least 400㎍ a day) from the stage of preparing for pregnancy can prevent neural tube defects in the baby
  • Many prenatal tests, such as the rubella antibody test, can be had free of charge at a public health center
  • Once your pregnancy is confirmed, apply for the National Happiness Card (국민행복카드), which supports pregnancy and childbirth medical costs
  • If you are taking any medicine, do not stop it on your own; discuss it with obstetrics and gynecology (산부인과)

During pregnancy, go to the hospital right away in these cases

  • Vaginal bleeding, or a feeling of amniotic fluid leaking
  • Regular tightening of the abdomen that is getting more frequent (especially before 37 weeks)
  • When you feel the baby's movements have clearly decreased
  • Severe headache, blurred vision, or sudden swelling (these can be signs of pre-eclampsia)

If you are unsure, do not put up with it; call the obstetrics and gynecology clinic you attend.

Support programs worth knowing about

  • The pregnancy and childbirth medical cost voucher (National Happiness Card) and the First Meeting Voucher (첫만남이용권)
  • Public health center: folic acid and iron supplements, and registration and care for pregnant women
  • Medical cost support for high-risk pregnancies, and support for fertility treatment costs (check conditions such as income criteria)
  • Extra support differs by region, so be sure to ask your local public health center

Frequently asked questions

Can I take cold medicine or Tylenol during pregnancy?

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is a fever and pain medicine that is used relatively safely during pregnancy. Still, with any medicine the rule is to tell your obstetrics and gynecology doctor or your pharmacist that you are pregnant and check with them, rather than deciding by yourself. Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen should be avoided in late pregnancy.
