Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis — from moisturizing to the latest treatments
What atopic dermatitis is
It is a chronic condition in which the skin barrier is weak, so dry, itchy eczema keeps coming back. It is common in babies and young children, and many of them get better as they grow; treatment options for adults with atopic dermatitis have also grown a lot. The goal is 'a state that is controlled, so it does not itch'.

The basics of care — moisturising
- Applying moisturiser at least twice a day, generously, within 3 minutes of a bath, is the basis of treatment
- Bathe in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes, using a mild, slightly acidic cleanser
- Sweat, rough clothes (wool) and sudden changes of temperature make the itching worse
- Breaking the scratching → worsening cycle matters (keep nails short; if it itches at night, ask about adjusting treatment)

How it is treated
- For an acute flare-up, using a steroid ointment at a suitable strength for the period needed is safe and effective. Avoiding it at all costs actually makes things worse
- Non-steroid ointments (calcineurin inhibitors and others) are also useful on the face and in skin folds
- For moderate or more severe disease, newer whole-body treatments such as biologics (dupilumab and others) and JAK inhibitors can bring a big improvement (covered by insurance if the criteria are met)
- Stopping standard treatment for unproven folk remedies is the most common cause of a flare-up

Frequently asked questions
Will it get better if I cut out certain foods?
You cut out a food only when a food allergy has been confirmed by testing and by symptoms. Cutting out several foods without evidence does harm to a growing child instead. If you suspect one, have it checked in an allergy specialist appointment before you decide.
I heard that using steroid ointment for a long time thins the skin
That can happen if you keep applying a high-strength ointment to the same place for a long time, but it can be used safely if you follow your doctor's instructions on strength and duration. Talk with your doctor about treating a flare-up fully and then cutting back as it improves (step-down use).
