What reflux esophagitis is
This is a common condition where the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn, acid coming up, a lump feeling in the throat, and a long-lasting cough. It is well controlled with medicine, but it comes back often if lifestyle habits do not change.

Lifestyle care is half of it
- No late-night eating — do not eat within 3 hours of going to sleep
- Eat less at one sitting, and cut down on greasy food, coffee, alcohol and fizzy drinks
- Lose weight (belly fat is a main cause of reflux)
- Stop smoking
- If symptoms are severe, raise the head end of the bed by about 10cm

Have an endoscopy check in these cases
- When swallowing is difficult or it hurts to swallow
- Unexplained weight loss, or anemia
- Black stool or vomiting blood (emergency)
- New symptoms that keep going in people aged 40 and over (the national screening gastroscopy can be used)
If Helicobacter pylori is found, eradication treatment can lower the risk of stomach ulcers coming back and of stomach cancer.

Frequently asked questions
Is it alright to take acid-suppressing medicine (PPI) for a long time?
It is a medicine that is taken long term when needed, but the rule is to adjust it to the lowest effective dose. If you stop suddenly because the symptoms have improved, rebound symptoms can appear, so discuss how to reduce it with your doctor.
