My tooth hurts
Recommended department — Dentistry
When to go straight to the emergency room
- Your face or jaw is swollen and you have a fever
- You cannot open your mouth properly
- Pain so bad that swallowing is difficult
If you have any of the symptoms above, call 119 or go to the nearest emergency room.
What should I do?
For sensitive or painful teeth, go to a dental clinic. Cavities, gum disease and wisdom tooth problems are all treated at a neighborhood dental clinic. If you are 19 or older, national health insurance covers a scaling once a year.
If severe pain starts at night, the usual advice is to take a painkiller (such as acetaminophen) and see a dentist the next day. But if your face swells and you have a fever, an infection may be spreading — go to an emergency room.
