What this board is about

This board covers endocrine and metabolic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease (an overactive or underactive thyroid, nodules) and high cholesterol. Diabetes and the thyroid have their own separate rooms. Endocrinology is the main department (internal medicine at clinic level).

Get to a hospital quickly in these cases

  • Drinking a lot of water, passing far more urine, and losing weight suddenly (possible diabetes)
  • Reduced consciousness, cold sweats or heavy shaking in a person with diabetes (low blood sugar — take sugar immediately, and call 119 if there is no improvement)
  • A lump at the front of the neck growing suddenly, or trouble swallowing or breathing
