Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of dizziness, occurring when small crystals (otoliths) inside the ear become dislodged.
- It typically presents as a brief but intense spinning sensation lasting less than 1 minute when lying down, sitting up, or turning over.
- Diagnosis is made through positional tests performed by an otolaryngologist, and in many cases, it can be treated immediately with a procedure called the canalith repositioning maneuver (Epley maneuver).
- While recurrence is common, it is not a dangerous condition.
