When is surgery necessary?
- Internal hemorrhoids that may protrude or not enter the rectum properly (grades 3 and 4), and which cause recurrent bleeding leading to anemia, may require surgery.
- If you suddenly develop a painful lump in your anus, it could be a thrombosed hemorrhoid or an anal abscess, so seek medical attention promptly (an abscess requires emergency drainage).
- Basic prevention: Avoid sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes (no smartphones), drink plenty of water and fiber, and avoid straining during bowel movements.
