Tuberculosis

More than two weeks of coughing, positive latent tuberculosis test result – Misconceptions and truths about tuberculosis.

Diseases that have not yet disappeared.

South Korea still has a significant number of tuberculosis cases. If you experience a persistent cough for more than two weeks, along with symptoms like low-grade fever, night sweats, and weight loss, it's important to get tested for tuberculosis.

  • The government covers most of the costs for testing and treatment (through public health centers and medical institutions).
  • Treatment involves taking multiple medications consistently for six months – stopping midway can lead to drug-resistant tuberculosis, making it much more difficult to treat.
  • After about two weeks of starting treatment, the infectiousness decreases significantly, allowing a return to normal activities.

It says I have a positive latent tuberculosis test, but does that mean I have tuberculosis?

Many people are surprised when they receive a notification of latent tuberculosis during health checkups or other screenings.

  • Latent tuberculosis means that the bacteria is dormant in the body, and you are not a tuberculosis patient and it is not contagious.
  • However, in some individuals (about 10%) over their lifetime, it can reactivate into active tuberculosis, so preventive treatment (taking medication for 3-4 months) may be recommended.
  • Preventive treatment is also eligible for national support. It is not a condition that you are obligated to report to your workplace.

Frequently asked questions

My family member has been diagnosed with tuberculosis. Should I get tested too?

Yes. Family members who live together are eligible for contact tracing examinations (chest X-ray + latent tuberculosis test), which can be received free of charge at the public health center.

Is it okay to drink alcohol while undergoing tuberculosis treatment?

Tuberculosis medications can put a strain on the liver, so abstaining from alcohol is generally recommended during the treatment period. Regular liver function tests are performed and treated as needed.
