Postpartum Depression
If you have given birth and can't stop crying, — Postpartum depression is a treatable condition.
Baby blues and postpartum depression are different things.
Postpartum "baby blues," characterized by mood swings and tearfulness for a few days after childbirth, is experienced by more than half of mothers and typically resolves within two weeks.
- If symptoms persist beyond two weeks, including difficulty calming down, excessive crying, insomnia (inability to sleep even when the baby sleeps), changes in appetite, and feelings of guilt about not feeling affection for the baby, it could be postpartum depression.
- This is a common condition affecting 10-15% of mothers, and it's neither a sign of weakness nor a reflection of being unfit as a mother.
- It can be effectively treated with counseling and medication (there are medications safe to use during breastfeeding) — you can consult your psychiatrist or obstetrician.

Do fathers also experience postpartum depression?
It's coming. There are reports that approximately 10% of fathers experience postpartum depression, and they too are candidates for counseling and treatment.
