Lupus (SLE)

A Thousand Faces: Autoimmune Disease Lupus - Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Designated Special Treatment.

If these symptoms overlap, it raises suspicion.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's own tissues, and it is relatively common in women of childbearing age.

  • Butterfly-shaped rash on both cheeks, worsening after sun exposure
  • Unexplained joint pain, mild fever, and extreme fatigue for several weeks or longer
  • Recurrent mouth ulcers, fingers turning white or blue in cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Foamy urine (proteinuria) - a sign of kidney involvement

Diagnosis is made by rheumatologists based on a combination of symptoms and blood tests (autoantibodies). A positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test alone does not mean someone has lupus.

Frequently asked questions

Is lupus hereditary?

While there may be a predisposition, it is not a disease that is directly inherited to children. Even if someone in the family has lupus, most people will not develop the condition.

Are there things that lupus patients should avoid?

Strong ultraviolet rays, smoking (which negatively affects disease activity and drug efficacy), and arbitrary discontinuation of medication are typical factors. Infection prevention (vaccination should be discussed with your primary care physician) is also important.
