Sinusitis that occurs after a cold.

Sinusitis is a condition in which inflammation and pus accumulate in the spaces within the bones surrounding the nose. It is suspected when symptoms such as a cold that lasts for more than 10 days, yellow nasal discharge, stuffy nose, pain when pressing on the face (cheeks and forehead), postnasal drip, and inability to smell persist.

  • Acute sinusitis usually resolves with medication (antibiotics may be necessary) (Otolaryngology).
  • If it lasts for more than 12 weeks, it is considered chronic sinusitis. It is evaluated using nasal endoscopy and CT scans, and surgery may be considered if polyps are present.

Nasal irrigation, when done correctly, is as good as medication.

Saline nasal irrigation is a proven method for both acute and chronic conditions.

  • Use saline solution or powder specifically designed for nasal rinsing, available at pharmacies (mix the powder with boiled and cooled water). Do not use plain tap water.
  • Tilt your head to the side and insert the solution into one nostril, allowing it to flow out of the other nostril. It may feel awkward at first, but you will quickly get used to it.
  • For children, a spray version can be used.

Frequently asked questions

Is surgery always necessary for sinusitis?

No, it usually improves with medication and nasal irrigation. Surgery is considered when the condition persists or recurs despite adequate medical treatment, or when there are large polyps.

Can sinusitis be a cause of headaches?

Pain in the forehead or front of the face can be related to sinusitis. However, before attributing chronic headaches solely to sinus problems, it is advisable to also evaluate other potential causes such as migraines.
