If an aneurysm is detected on a brain MRA, surgery is not always necessary.
Just because something is discovered doesn't mean it will be revealed immediately.
Cerebral aneurysms are characterized by a bulging of part of the wall of a blood vessel in the brain, and they are often discovered incidentally during brain MRA scans (in 2-3% of adults).
- The annual risk of rupture for small aneurysms is low, so decisions about whether to monitor them (with regular MRAs) or treat them are made based on a comprehensive assessment of size, location, shape, age, and family history.
- Treatment options include coil embolization, which accesses the aneurysm through blood vessels in the leg, and clipping, which involves opening the skull. These procedures are discussed with neurosurgeons and interventional neurologists.
- Things to do after diagnosis: quit smoking (significantly increases the risk of rupture), manage blood pressure, and reduce excessive alcohol consumption.

This headache is different—it's a sign of a rupture.
If an aneurysm ruptures (subarachnoid hemorrhage), you will experience a headache unlike anything you've ever felt before, like being hit with a hammer, that reaches its peak in just seconds. This may be accompanied by vomiting, neck stiffness, and decreased consciousness. Such headaches always require calling 119 – emergency treatment can determine life or death. It is very different from typical stress-related headaches, so if you have a family history of this condition, remember these signs.
