If a polyp has been removed, when is the next endoscopy scheduled? What does a polyp mean?
Removing polyps is a way to prevent colorectal cancer.
Most cases of colorectal cancer develop from adenomatous polyps that grow over several years. Removing any detected polyps during endoscopy is therefore a practical form of cancer prevention.
- Polyps are usually asymptomatic – they can only be detected through examination.
- The national cancer screening program includes a fecal occult blood test (annually) for individuals aged 50 and older. If the result is positive, a colonoscopy is recommended. Consider having a colonoscopy earlier if you have a family history of colorectal cancer.
- The results of a biopsy performed on the removed polyp (whether it's an adenoma, how many there are, and their size) determine the timing of the next examination.

When is my next endoscopy?
The timing may vary depending on the results of the examination, but here are some general guidelines (please follow the specific instructions provided by the hospital where you were examined).
- If there are no polyps or only a small number (1-2) of adenomas: Usually 5 years later.
- If there are more than 3 adenomas, each larger than 1cm, or if high-risk tissue is present: Within 3 years.
- Keep a copy of the results with photos – this will serve as a reference when you move to a different hospital for future checkups.
- "Polyp = Cancer" is not always true. If polyps were removed, the risk associated with those specific polyps is eliminated, and any new growths can be detected during the next examination.
