Osteoporosis
Silent weakening of bones - Bone density tests and fracture prevention.
There are no symptoms until it breaks.
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the amount and quality of bone decreases, making it prone to fractures even from minor impacts. It is common in postmenopausal women and men over 70 years old, and often has no symptoms, so the first sign may be a fracture.
- Bone density tests (for women aged 54 and 66) are included in the national health checkup, so please make sure to get them done.
- If your height has decreased by more than 4 cm compared to when you were younger, or if you have fractured your wrist, spine, or hip bone from a minor fall, you need to undergo a test.
- A hip fracture can drastically change one's life in old age – prevention is key.

The medication actually reduces fractures.
- If diagnosed with osteoporosis, medication (oral medications, injections every 6 months or 1 year) significantly reduces the risk of fractures. Coverage by national health insurance is available if certain criteria are met.
- Calcium and vitamin D are essential but cannot replace medication.
- Strength training and balance exercises (squats, heel raises), as well as fall prevention measures at home (anti-slip mats in bathrooms, night lights), are just as important as medication.
- Oral medications should be taken on an empty stomach with a glass of water, and it is crucial to follow the instructions carefully, such as not lying down for 30 minutes after taking them.
Frequently asked questions
It's called osteoporosis. Do I need to take medication for it?
Osteopenia is a pre-osteoporosis stage, and in most cases, it's managed through lifestyle changes such as exercise, calcium intake, and vitamin D supplementation. However, if there are risk factors like a history of fractures, medication may be started, so it's recommended to undergo a risk assessment.
Can I get dental treatment even after receiving a bone density injection?
Some osteoporosis medications may require adjustments before dental procedures such as implants or extractions. If you have a dental treatment plan, be sure to inform both your doctors about any medications you are taking.
