Thyroid Nodules
During a check-up, it was found that I have a nodule on my thyroid gland – what does this really mean?
Nodules are common, and most are benign.
Ultrasound examinations reveal thyroid nodules in nearly half of adults, and over 90% are benign.
- Fine needle aspiration biopsy (taking cells with a thin needle) is only performed if the nodule appears suspicious on ultrasound or exceeds a certain size – being recommended for a needle biopsy does not mean it's cancerous.
- Benign nodules are monitored with ultrasounds every 6 months to 2 years, focusing solely on changes in size.
- If you experience sudden hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or rapid growth of the nodule, schedule an earlier appointment.

If you've been diagnosed with thyroid cancer,
Most thyroid cancers (papillary carcinoma) progress very slowly and are therefore called "turtle cancer." Very small, low-risk tumors may be managed with active surveillance instead of immediate surgery. Even when surgery is necessary, the prognosis is generally very good. Instead of being alarmed by the diagnosis, listen carefully to the explanations regarding size, location, and whether metastasis has occurred. You can share your experiences in the thyroid cancer discussion forum at Mureumureu.
Frequently asked questions
Should I stop consuming iodine-rich foods like seaweed and kelp?
There is no need to restrict seaweed intake for people with general nodules. Extreme excess or deficiency are both undesirable, so consume it normally. A restricted diet is only necessary before radioactive iodine therapy.
If there is a nodule, do I also need to have blood tests done?
Usually, a thyroid function test (TSH) is also checked. This is because the approach differs for hot nodules that exhibit hyperfunction.
