H. pylori

If Helicobacter pylori is found during an upper endoscopy: Everything you need to know about eradication therapy.

Should I remove it, or is it okay to leave it?

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that lives in the stomach lining and is a major cause of gastric and duodenal ulcers, as well as increasing the risk of stomach cancer. A significant portion of adults in Korea are infected.

  • If you have ulcers, a family history of stomach cancer, or have undergone treatment for early-stage stomach cancer, eradication therapy is strongly recommended.
  • Even if no specific abnormalities are found, eradication may be considered for preventative purposes against stomach cancer – consult with your doctor.
  • Eradication involves taking two antibiotics plus a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) for 1 to 2 weeks.

Antimicrobial therapy: The key to success lies in taking medication.

  • Taking the medication exactly as prescribed and completing the entire course is crucial for success. Stopping midway will only leave behind resistant bacteria.
  • Avoid alcohol during treatment. A metallic taste in the mouth or diarrhea are common, but usually manageable.
  • Four weeks after completing the medication, a urea breath test (a test performed while breathing) confirms whether the eradication of the bacteria was successful.
  • If the initial treatment fails, there is a second course of treatment with a different combination of medications.

Frequently asked questions

Can families share a table? Is it okay to share a pot of stew?

It is mainly contracted during childhood, and transmission to adults is not common. However, from a hygiene standpoint, it is recommended to use individual utensils and serve food separately. While you don't necessarily need to be tested just because your spouse has been cleared, it is advisable to get tested if you have ulcers or a family history of the condition.

Does eliminating bacteria prevent stomach cancer?

The risk is significantly reduced, but it does not become zero. Even after eradication, you should continue to undergo national endoscopic screening (every 2 years for those aged 40 or older).
